About KDE
Kappa Delta Epsilon was founded in 1933 as a sister organization of Kappa Phi Kappa, a professional educational fraternity for men. KDE was established as a national honorary professional organization for women. In 1978, the name of the organization was changed from sorority to society, and men were allowed into membership.
The UGA Chapter, Alpha Epsilon, was chartered on April 16, 1956. There were thirteen original members initiated on that day at the Georgian Hotel in downtown Athens. The Georgian Hotel is now an apartment complex and the site of Trumps Catering. The UGA chapter is proud to welcome our newest advisor Dr. Beth Tolley. Other advisors have been Dr. Mary K. Scott, Dr. Ila Rooks, Dr. Elizabeth Aderhold, Dr. Kay Damron-Dillard, Dr. Frank Flanders, Christina Akin, and co-advisors Dr. Stacey Neuhart-Prichett and Dr. Kyunghwa Lee.
The goals of Kappa Delta Epsilon are:
- To promote pride in education as a career choice
- To recognize and reward outstanding achievement in scholarship, service, and leadership.
- To develop competent and assertive educational leadership.
- To promote individual achievement in preparation for a career in education.
- To promote actions that foster self confidence in members.
- To develop skills in communications, human relations, and societal interaction.
- To build cooperative attitudes among members.
- To promote organized recreational and social activities for KDE members.
- To promote collegiality among members.
- To acquaint members with educational leaders.
- To inform members of opportunities within The College of Education and The University.
- To promote service to The College of Education, The University of Georgia, and the educational community.
The KDE Coat of Arms
As with most logos, the KDE coat of arms is symbolic. It contains seven parts that represents ideals
which are important to our organization.
- The upper helmet protects the warrior's head; therefore it suggests prowess.
- The closed visor suggests prudence in speech and wisdom in counsel.
- The four diamond shapes represent four light giving windows. They exemplify the self, nature, society and God.
- The fleurs-de-lis, two above and one below, symbolize the love of truth,
the love of beauty, and the love of goodness.
- The torsade is entwined in six folds, which represent the six original chapters of KDE.
- The annulet, formed of concentric circles at the top of the coat of arms,
represents the perfection to which we aspire.
- The mantling, extending out and around the shield, serves as protection
to our shield against any storms that may assail us.
